President’s address: IISL’s 60th anniversary

Evolution of the Counterspace Threat and Strengthening of International Space Partnerships (Prague, June 9—11, 2019)

Dear members and friends of IISL,

As I made you aware in my New Year’s message, IISL is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. Our President Emerita Tanja Masson-Zwaan reminded me that for the 50th anniversary, the Institute held numerous events and, what should be a challenge for us, arranged a magnificent cake with a beautiful IISL logo.

On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, the Institute re-issued the seminal 1972 book by its former President and former ICJ President Manfred Lachs, ’The Law of Outer Space: An Experience in Contemporary Law-Making’. During the celebration at the IAC in Prague, the book was presented by editors Tanja Masson-Zwaan and Stephan Hobe to Ambassador Eugene Wyzner, who had succeeded Judge Lachs as chairman of COPUOS Legal Subcommittee. (The book can be purchased via this link: https://bit.ly/2SKJxRG.)

In this message, I would like to share with you, what activities the Board of Directors has foreseen so far as 60th anniversary events in order to promote the Institute and space law to the space and other communities.

You might have seen that we already launched a 60th anniversary logo competition which is still open for inputs. We plan to disclose and show the winning logo for the first time at the IISL/ECSL Symposium at the UNCOPUOS Legal Subcommittee on 23 March 2020. It will then be used for communications throughout the year. We will have a second call this spring. This one will ask you for submitting photos from IISL activities and events, for which we will host an exhibition at IAC in October. In the meantime, the Directorate of Studies will prepare a booklet on IISL’s 60 years record of contributions to space law. This will also be presented at our Colloquium during IAC. An initiative on new members will add a fourth element. You will receive more information on each of this in upcoming IISL Newsletters and pushmails.

There will be many events during the year, where all of us can join in the celebration mood: the IISL events at the Space Symposium in Colorado Springs, the IISL/ECSL Symposium at UNCOPUOS-LSC, the IISL/CSA/CISL/CNSA Symposium in Fouzhou, the IISL Colloquium at IAC in Dubai, the IISL Galloway Symposium in Washington D.C. and the Annual IISL meeting at RUDN University in Moscow. At all our activities, we can share our pride in IISL.

And we can promote, what is at the core of our mission: the rule of law in outer space. I invite you all to celebrate and to participate in the 60th anniversary activities of IISL!

 Kai-Uwe Schrogl
