The Latin American Test Round of the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition (the Latin American Regional Competition Test Round) is held for the first time in 2019.

The 2019 Latin American Test Round of the Manfred Lachs Moot Court Competition is organised by the Moot Court Committee of the International Institute of Space Law (IISL), Red Latinoamericana y del Caribe del Espacio – Relaca Espacio and Universidad Católica de Colombia.

The finals of the 2019 Latin American Test Round will be held at Universidad Católica de Colombia, in Bogotá, Colombia, on 16 & 17 May 2019 (Friday and Saturday). The winning team will receive partial financial support for their attendance in the World Finals as auditors and viewers.

The competition will be held entirely in English.

Registration

This Competition presents a unique opportunity for teams of 2 to 3 students to engage in matters of public international law of contemporary relevance to outer space, to develop their legal advocacy skills with other top universities from throughout the region and to interact in a unique forum for intellectual and cultural exchange. The Competition is open for law students and students enrolled in schools other than law where space law or public international law forms a part of the teaching program. Each school may send one team.

The Problem for 2019

The name of this year’s moot court problem is Case Concerning the use of space resources for military purposes (Suniza v Azasi). Additional legal issues are presented regarding the use of abandoned lunar facilities, and liability for damages resulting from an explosion on the Moon. The parties have agreed to submit their dispute to the International Court of Justice for resolution. See for more information including the official rules of the competition this year’s MC page.
