IISL-CISL Seminar on National Space Legislation

The International Institute of Space Law (IISL) and the China Institute of Space Law (CISL) held a Seminar on National Space Legislation in Beijing, China on the evening of 17 November 2014, as a side event of the UN/China/APSCO Workshop on Space Law.

This Seminar was jointly sponsored by IISL and CISL, and hosted by the Space Law Institute of Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT). The theme of the Seminar was Lessons Learned from the National Space Legislation of Leading Space-faring Nations, as a complement to one of the session topics of the UN/China/APSCO Workshop, which focused on experience and prospects of national space legislation.

Prof. Tanja Masson-Zwaan of Leiden University (the Netherlands), Prof. Henry Hertzfeld of George Washington University (USA) and Prof. Setsuko Aoki of Keio University (Japan) were invited as keynote speakers. Secretary General Prof. Zhang Zhenjun of the China Institute of Space Law (CISL) served as organizer and moderator.

The event was acclaimed as a huge success, attracting more than 40 participants from China and beyond, including many students from various universities as well as several speakers/panelists of the UN/China/APSCO Workshop such as Prof. Li Shouping and Prof. Wang Guoyu of Beijing Institute of Technology, Prof. Zhao Haifeng of the Harbin Institute of Technology, Prof Joanne Irene Gabrynowicz of Mississippi University,and Honorary President Prof. Kim Doo Hwan of the Korean Society of Air and Space Law. As a result of heated discussions among panelists and audience, the Q&A session had to be extended for half an hour.
