Prof. Sergio Marchisio (Italy)

Sergio Marchisio is Full Professor of International Law at the University Sapienza of Rome and Director of the Institute for International Legal Studies of the National Research Council (ISGI-CNR). Since 2007 he is Chairman of the European Centre for Space Law (ECSL) within the European Space Agency (ESA).
Representative of the Italian government in a number of international conferences, he acts as Legal Expert of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Member of the Italian delegation to the UNCOPUOS, he served as Chairman of the Legal Subcommittee (2004-2006). From 2002 to 2011 he chaired the Committee of Governmental Experts entrusted to negotiate the UNIDROIT Space Assets Protocol to the 2001 Cape Town Convention on International Interests in Mobile Equipment.
Legal expert of the Italian MAF to the Council of the EU for the CODUN Space meetings. In 2010, he has been appointed as Member of the Task Force of the EEASEU for the Draft Code of Conduct on Space Activities.
He is a Member of the Board of Directors of the International Institute of Space Law (IISL), Full Member of the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA), Member of the Académie de l’air et l’espace (ANAE) and a Member of Faculty of the London Institute of Space Policy and Law. He is also Member Member of the International Law Association, Committees on Diplomatic Protection Committee and Space Law (ILA), of the French Society of International Law, the American Society of International Law and the International Association for Water Law.
Since 2001 he is Secretary General of the Italian Society of International Law (SIDI), Member of the Italian Section of the International Commission on Civil Status of Strasbourg (CIEC); Correspondent Member of the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT); Member of the Council of the Italian Society for International Organization (SIOI) and of the Italian Consultative Committee on Human Rights. He is Italian Correspondent of the TMC Asser Institute, The Hague. He is Director of the 2nd Level Master’s Degrees in Space Institutions and Policy, organised by CNR, SIOI and the Italian Space Agency (ASI), and on International Protection of Human Rights at Sapienza University of Rome.
Author of more than 100 publications in International Law, European Union Law and Space Law.
